Preparing for Breast-feeding

There is hardly any advance planning needed for breast-feeding other than eating healthily as well as researching exactly what equipment you want/require to make feeding go efficiently. Even if you are likely to breast--feed solely, I do suggest that you have some bottle--feeding gear in the house for the following reasons:

Problems might arise which, temporarily, help to make breast--feeding hard (for example, aching nipples, or even the baby is not able to latch on). Your baby must learn to feed from a bottle as well as the breasts so he'll happily make the transfer in the event that/if you have to stop breast-feeding. Very few babies are breast-fed up until the stage where they can proceed straight through breast to beaker.

You'll need:

A container of throw away breast--pads or a minimum of eighteen washable types at least 3 well--fitting maternity bras nipple cream (I highly recommend Lansinoh) at least one bottle and teat a bottle brush a steam steriliser, or a little bottle of sterilising fluid or packet of sterilising tablets a breast pump and you may also require: two nipple shields 2 breast shells (if your breasts leak lots of milk between feeds) a little carton of ready-made formula milk (for use in desperate situations only)

Breast pumps

They are an invaluable help to most moms. You might need one because: you have primary engorgement and your infant either cannot latch on or cannot empty your own breasts you've blocked milk ducts (a pump might help to clear all of them) your nipples are aching and you require some respite your baby cannot or will not suck effectively and is consequently not draining your breasts properly you occasionally wish to express your milk so someone else may feed your child you want to promote milk production if your supply is reduced you have to return to work however want to keep on giving your baby breast milk

I recommend that you simply buy, instead of rent, a pump and I also suggest that you purchase an electric rather than manual pump as these usually work better if you are planning to do lots of expressing.
